The Far South

Another one for the bucket list; Cockle Creek is as far south as your wheeled vehicle will take you in Australia.

The Far South

The famous Cockle Creek. Bleak and blowy a lot of the time and perfect for the rest. There’s some great camping down this way and the attractions include solitude, bush walking, a bit of history and a heap of wildlife. I’d rate it as one of my favourite spots in Tasmania and for those of you who know Tasmania, that is a very big accolade. When I first came down this way 20 or more years ago, I was impressed that I could park up for a month before anyone would get too upset with me and I see this is still the case. That is a freedom slowly being eroded around our country, so I hope it lasts in Tasmania at least until my demise.

Apart from being at the southerly extremes of Australia’s big bits, what is there down here? Well you are surrounded by the massive South West National Park and this is one of those places where you could believe you will see just about anything, dinosaurs included. The bay used to be packed with whales and there is a bronze sculpture celebrating this out on one of the points. Of course, us humans killed most of them because that is what we do, but we hope in time they will come back as numbers increase in our waters which thankfully, they are now doing at a pretty good rate. Southern Right Whales come into the bay for a bit of a rest from time to time so keep the eyes peeled, because they are huge and impressive.
