The York Festival is an excellent example of how an annual, multi-arts community festival can help to revitalise a country town and is an exciting addition to any tour of outback Western Australia. Since its inception in 2014, it has grown as a vibrant and multifaceted event that draws visitors to the town as well as engaging the local people in its activities. In 2022, it takes place during the Spring school holidays from 24 September to 9 October, with activities every day during those two weeks.
York is situated among gently sloping canola and wheat fields, strewn amongst rolling paddocks grazing sheep and cattle. The town has preserved its historical architecture, being WA’s oldest inland colonial township, and is a picturesque escape from the road.
The York Festival is the perfect time to visit, happening during Western Australia’s spectacular wildflower season in Djlba, the First Spring. Picture-worthy flowers and plants dot the rocky outcrops and wild land pockets between properties and beside the road ways. It is well worth a discovery bushwalk, with many trails throughout the town.
The TYF program includes weekends packed with jazz and writing events, as well as theatre, dance, comedy, visual art/craft exhibitions and interactive workshops, and features high quality presentations and performances by professional artists and musicians from around the country.
